Juan Contreras (he/him/él)

Hi! I’m Juan Contreras (he/him/él). I am a psychotherapist in Chicago, IL and Washington, D.C. I currently practice at Roamers Therapy.

We often feel stuck or so overwhelmed with emotional experiences and negative thoughts. When these experiences get to us, we feel trapped, unheard, distressed, and even hopeless. These types of experiences eventually keep us from pursing what’s important in life. So, as your trauma-informed and culturally sensitive therapist, I’d like to invite you to join me in a unique experience where you can share and explore your experiences in a non-judgmental and affirming space. In collaboration, we will identify ways to manage time-consuming thoughts, emotional experiences, and other related behaviors that prevent us from pursuing our personal values in life.

Through my clinical practice, I aim to combine modern and traditional therapeutic approaches to use tools like mindfulness and cognitive behavioral strategies to help folks manage emotional disorders like anxiety and depression. After completing my graduate program and clinical training at the University of Chicago, I’ve become familiar with various therapeutic frameworks surrounding mental health care, primarily focusing on approaches that go beyond traditional methods to tailor interventions to your personal experiences and identities.

Lastly, I’d like to share that I’ve come to value the power of narratives to inform vital processes in society like policy and even clinical practice after spending several years collecting data on various research efforts that have focused on the lives of marginalized individuals. I see the importance of centering your story to begin incremental change in ourselves and as a society.

Coffee is always something that brings me joy and even talking about it. Research outside of the clinical sphere also brings me joy as a way to connect with others in the community.
